I have a hp pavilion dv6000 laptop which has been working fine until one day I tried to turn it on once and it turned on for two seconds then turned off  and on again with no display on the screen, this on and off problem continued for some weeks.I took the laptop to a technician who was able to fix the problem at a cost of Kshs.3,000.00 approx USD($35.29). The laptop worked fine for two months then developed the same problem again after which I took it back to the same technician for repair, it worked for one month before malfunctioning (Turning ON and OFF). This time round I decided not to take it back to any technician for repair, so I decided to be my own technician after doing more research on how to solve this problem.

Solving The Problem
1. First, duct-tape all the external vents on the unit, so no air gets in or out.

2. Turn on computer, let the boot sequence go for about 5 seconds (wait until the fan speed changes from fast to slow during the boot time) when the LED on the quick play lights for a second time and the fan speed is fast press ESC button or F10 or CTRL+ALT+DEL.

3. Plug in the AC power adapter then wrap the laptop in towels or a blanket for about 40 minutes or an hour.

4. Remove the blanket/towels and any other obstacle(s) on the vents, turn it off and let the laptop cool for about 20-30 minutes.

5. After cooling turn it on and hopefully the power will be stable this time round with no ON and OFF problem.

Basis of the problem
The common problem with DV6000 series is the  video chip being over heated and detached a bit from the mobo. 
HP had extended the warranty on a lot of these machines from 1 year to 2 years due to threats of lawsuits, because of this video chip issue. It is common with a few other models besides the DV6000, where they used the same GPU chip design (ATI)

At times you may encounter such problems with your machine especially when you try to turn the wireless button ON but it still lights orange, here are some of the procedures to follow so that you work out such a problem:

1. Right Click the network icon on the task-bar (Located on the lower right-side of the screen)

2. Select “Open Network and Sharing Center”

3. The window below appears……….Select “Change Adapter Settings”

4.Select “Wireless Network Connection” then choose “Diagnose this Connection”

5. Wait for the problem to be solved by the system then click next  from the dialogue box until the problem is fixed.
